Another German case of dioxin in eggs

23-05-2012 | | |

German authorities have reported that another farm has been found with eggs containing the chemical dioxin at higher than permitted levels, Reuters reports.

The poultry farm is near Borken in the German province of Nordrhien-Westfalen. The same province was the site of the reported dioxin discoveries in April.

The farm, which according to the ministry of Agriculture discovered traces of the chemical using its own safety checks, has been sealed and the produce is currently being withdrawn from sale while the source of the dioxin is looked into.

Germany was the location of a large scale dioxin contamination scandal in January 2011, prompting an EU-wide health alert. The nation has since then introduced tougher restrictions on animal feed ingredients, the source of the contamination in poultry and their eggs.
