Vietnamese man dies of bird flu, first since 2005

Over the weekend the Vietnamese Deputy Health Minister, Trinh Quan Huan, confirmed that a 20-year-old man has died as a result of bird flu, H5N1, the first human death in 17 months.

The man died on the 10 June. According to media reports the his raised fighting cocks and ducks.

Of the remaining four cases, two have recovered and two are still undergoing treatment. None of the five cases have been confirmed by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

According to WHO figures the H5N1 bird flu virus has killed more than 190 people since 2003, Indonesia being the hardest hit with 80 deaths.
