Avian influenza vaccination in Poultry World 5

Avian influenza vaccination in Poultry World 5

The latest edition of Poultry World is available online. In this edition we visit a former investment banker who had built a thriving farming business in Scotland. In an interview with Poultry World, the chairman of the Dutch Poultry Centre reflects on the past and looks at what lies ahead for the organisation and the country, and we hear how decisive action is needed across the globe to protect our industry from avian influenza. This and more in the latest online edition.

WOAH urges coordinated global action on poultry vaccination

The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) has launched its first-ever State of the World’s Animal Health report, positioning vaccination as a critical pillar in the fight against transboundary diseases, including high pathogenicity avian influenza.

Expert opinion: Avian Influenza, a global threat to all

Dutch researchers are at the forefront of trials of an avian influenza vaccine. Considerable effort has gone into vaccinating test groups without jeopardising the export status of poultry products. After all, vaccinating against avian influenza is widely considered taboo when it comes to trading poultry products across borders. Decisive action is needed across the globe to protect our industry from avian influenza, says Fabian Brockötter.

Interview: Working together to remain a guiding country in the sector

The Dutch Poultry Centre has been around for 20 years. In this interview with Poultry World, chairman Jan Wolleswinkel reflects on the past and looks at what lies ahead for the organisation and the country.

Scottish banker becomes successful farmer

The big money from tech and banking is increasingly finding its way to agriculture. With an extensive arable farm and an expanding layer flock, former investor Jimmy Smith has become attached to the agricultural sector and is wildly enthusiastic about the returns and his new lifestyle.

The bigger picture: Welfare comes at a cost

A recent study has highlighted some key challenges that are preventing the UK poultry industry from adopting higher welfare standards.

From cage to cage

Poultry farming in Indonesia is in a transitional phase. Eying efficiency and consumer trends, caged housing systems are seen as a challenge for sustainable egg production and a benefit for more efficient poultry meat production. This is why layer farmers are abandoning the housing system in favour of aviary systems and broiler producers are increasingly investing in broiler cages.

New insights into insect vectors causing histomoniasis

Research on the insectome in and around broiler breeder pullet farms has identified new potential vectors of Histomonas meleagridis, the protozoa that cause histomoniasis. The study results show the presence of new potential arthropods transmitting histomoniasis between farms.

Supporting layer productivity in hot climates by adding organic acids to drinking water

When temperatures rise, poultry performance and profitability can fall. This production dilemma is especially concerning given that temperatures in the last decade have reflected the warmest years on record. Hot temperatures place additional stress on laying hens as heat stress reduces hens’ feed intake, compromises laying, adversely affects health and increases mortality rates.

Preventing economical losses in feed

Poultry feed is an expensive commodity. Any loss or reduction of feed utilisation can seriously impact the profitability of poultry enterprises. Approaches leading to the more economical use of feed by both broilers and layers should, therefore, be considered by poultry producers.

Future-proofing poultry: Insights from the industry

A realistic look at the future of poultry production – from the egg to the slaughterhouse’ was the theme of EW Nutrition’s recent 2-day event held in Berlin, Germany. Designed to provide participants with cutting-edge insights into sustainable poultry production, the programme brought together industry experts to explore innovations across the entire poultry value chain.

Hunger or not – that is the question

In recent years, columnist Rick van Emous and senior researcher at Wageningen University, has been increasingly struggling with the assumed connection between fast-growing broiler breeders and hunger. He shares his thoughts.
