Chicken for Chinese New Year without fear of bird flu

30-01-2008 | | |

Chicken sold during the upcoming Chinese New Year, which occurs in early February, will be safe from the deadly avian influenza, said Livestock Development Department director-general Sakchai Sriboonsue.

There are fears surrounding the consumption of chicken following the re-emergence of avian influenza in chickens in Nakhon Sawan and Phichit provinces earlier this week. However, Sakchai assured members of the public that the consumption of chicken during the Chinese New Year, which falls on February 7, will be safe because certificates will be issued after laboratory tests.
It has been reported that it will take several days for laboratory analysts to identify the strain of bird flu virus that infected chickens raised by farmers in Phichit’s Sak Lek district. Governmental agencies are currently working to contain the bird flu outbreak, including the transfer of birds to slaughterhouses.
