Growth and investment in Northern Indian production
As a result of economic development, the
poultry industry in Northern India is slated for tremendous growth, thereby
increasing the consumption of chicken meat.
Suguna Poultry Farm, the first producer
of broiler chickens in India, is planning to invest around 1.2 billion rupees
(more than €20 million) in Northern India
in the next two years, employing more than 1,000 farmers in the region and
providing indirect employment to 7,000 people, according to Mr B Soundararajan,
Suguna's Managing Director. The company's expansion is already evident from the
increase in the number of farmers from 10 in 1993 to 12,000 in 2006.
Currently, the per capita poultry meat consumption is 1.78 kg in India
whereas the consumption level in US and Asia is at 45.18 kg and 25.8 kg
respectively.
Current Indian broiler meat production is 1.7 mt. The poultry
industry is expected to produce 216 million layers and 3,500 million broilers by
the year 2010.
