Vepymo and Hendrix Genetics strengthen ties

Hendrix-Genetics is acquiring a 20% minority interest in Vepymo, the Belgian hatchery and rearing organisation which supplies 17-week old hens, day-old chicks and hatching eggs. By signing a letter of intent, the 2 companies have given a strong signal that their collaboration regarding the breeding and distribution of Isa Brown, Bovans Brown and Dekalb White will be further strengthened. “We are very happy about this step,” says Hans Pyfferoen, Manager of Vepymo. “There is now 100% clarity among our buyers and our staff that Vepymo is, and will continue to be, an important link between the breeding farms and the poultry farmers in North West Europe.”

Hy-Line International introduces new variety

Hy-Line International, has kicked-off its 80th Anniversary celebration by introducing a new variety – the W-80. Appropriately named for the company’s milestone, the W-80 is a robust white egg layer for all housing systems and environments. This bird delivers prolific egg numbers, excellent egg shell strength, and strong performance under challenging environments and low-density feed rations. The W-80 is adaptable to alternative production systems and remains calm for easy management. For markets requiring a larger egg size, the W-80 Plus gives producers the same great traits with an egg weight profile 2 grams heavier. Its persistency for long single-cycle lay means more eggs on 5 grams less feed. Producers gain more profitability with a feed savings of approximately 2kg per bird per year versus competing brands.

Cobb-Vantress to construct $22 million feed mill

Tyson Foods subsidiary, Cobb-Vantress, will soon begin construction on a new feed mill in Laurens County, South Carolina, with completion planned towards the middle of 2017. Based on current needs, the mill will produce around 1,200 tons per week using the latest technology for pathogen reduction including a ‘hygieniser’ for heat treating the feed ingredients before pelleting. Additionally, environmental controls will regulate air flow to prevent cross contamination.

Nutriad excels in EU-funded Campylobacter research project

In a recent EU baseline survey, the average prevalence of Campylobacter in broilers and on carcasses was found to be 71% and 76%, respectively. Therefore, in  an extensive study, broilers were orally infected with Campylobacter jejuni and were fed one of 24 feed additives, including Nutriad’s fat-coated butyrate product, Adimix Precision. Analysis showed that only 2 treatments were linked to a significant reduction in mean caeca Campylobacter counts at all sampling moments: Adimix Precision, included at 3 kg/T, and a mixture of C8- and C10-monoglycerides, included at 8 kg/T. Of these 2 products, a 2 log10 reduction at day 42 was only observed for Adimix Precision. Caecal Campylobacter counts can vary a lot, even among birds of the same treatment, making it more difficult for customers to evaluate the effect of additives on Campylobacter in a commercial setting. These results demonstrate that, on top of improving gut health and zootechnical performance, the product can have an additional role in a complete Campylobacter control programme.
