Egyptian poultry producers are to receive a high-tech helping hand to provide them with an early warning system in the battle against avian influenza and other poultry diseases.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) will later this month (31 July) launch a mobile app and web platform, which will provide an early warning, reporting, monitoring and awareness service for small poultry producers.

The app and web platform will be launched at the Avian-Diseases Monitoring and Awareness Network (AMAN) workshop in Cairo and has been developed in conjunction with the Egyptian veterinary service.

It will provide a rapid, real time, efficient communication channel, allowing for an effective and immediate action during the occurrence of a poultry disease outbreak, from detection, reporting to response.

The system has email and mobile notifications as well as SMS Gateway for registered farmers. And it will also include a poultry farm’s module for collecting data and information along with farm location identification for all poultry farms in Egypt for knowledge sharing and exchange.

Egypt has around 2.5m small poultry farms spread across the country.
