Bird flu fatality number 57 in Indonesia
A 35-year-old Indonesian woman has died of H5N1 avian
influenza - the country's 57th death from the virus.
According to local reports, the woman's case was confirmed on November 13,
and she died after almost three weeks of treatment in a Jakarta hospital.
The woman may be the same 35-year-old described by the
World Health Organisation (WHO)
as a confirmed case-patient in a statement of November 13, but news reports are
in conflict over this point.
Joko Suyono, an official with the
avian
flu information center, said diseased poultry was the likely source of the
woman's infection.
At the
WHO's last count on November 13, Indonesia had 74 bid flu
cases with 56 deaths. If confirmed by the WHO, this latest case will be the
country's 57th. Vietnam has had the highest number of cases of bird flu in
humans, with 93.
