PETA calls for benign disposal of AI-affected birds
People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals (PETA) have urged Alabama to use humane methods in their plans to deal
with any possible outbreak of bird flu in the state.
Should bird flu (avian influenza) get loose in Alabama's (USA) chicken
population many birds will need to be eradicated.
Alabama raises more than a billion each year. The PETA letter pointed out
that other countries have resorted to burning and burying chickens alive when
faced with the epidemic, a practice that wouldn't occur in Alabama, state
officials said.
