UPDATE: Laos confirms bird flu outbreak
The Lao government has announced that the country’s first bird flu outbreak in seven months has been confirmed. .
Foreign ministry spokesman Yong Chanthalangsy said that the presence of the bird flu virus had been confirmed after 112 birds were found dead in the village of Nonesavang, near the capital city Vientiane.
Ten chickens in the village died on January 8, and after a test confirmed that they had the bird flu virus, 1,000 chickens were culled in the area and the transportation of birds in the immediate vicinity was banned.
Chanthalangsy said there have been no reports of human bird flu infections. The country’s previous outbreak occurred in July 2006.
