Nigerian state bans egg imports
Concerns over bird flu (avian influenza) have prompted Nigeria's Rivers State
Ministry of Agriculture to ban the importation of eggs into the
state.
The Poultry Product Dealers Association (PPDA) said in a statement "Rivers
State cannot be made a dumping ground from poultry products that may have been
infected by the bird flu virus elsewhere."
The PPDA in association with the Veterinary Department of the Ministry of
Health have warned that those who illegally import poultry birds and eggs will
be prosecuted.
Also as part of the precautionary measures, all poultry farmers have to
register their poultry, birdhouses with the PPDA. Failure to do so could result
in legal action.
