Perdue celebrates 5 mln safe hours

Perdue Farms’ employees at the Washington, facility have logged 5 mln consecutive production hours without a single Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) -recordable lost-time case.

Counting toward the milestone began in April 2006, and included associates from the plant and feed mill, the hatchery and the breeders.

“To sustain this level of consecutive safe working days is a remarkable accomplishment and one that could not have happened without the commitment to safety by every associate within our organization. I’m proud of our team members for setting such a high standard for operational safety excellence,” said Marc Maynard, Director of Operations.

According to Maynard, Perdue has a standard, companywide safety program that encourages active employee participation and input. Associates take part in safety committees, which meet regularly to discuss safety issues, as well as perform safety inspections before the start of each shift. Members have the authority to stop production or prevent start-up if any unsafe condition exists. In addition, every associate attends safety awareness training, and is encouraged to look for and report any potential hazard.

Statistics reportedly state that Perdue’s OSHA Recordable Incident Rate is 3.38 as compared to the Poultry Industry rate of 6.60.
