Japan bans French foie gras
Japan has reportedly suspended imports of raw foie gras and poultry from France following an outbreak of bird flu there.
After it was reported that the H5 strain of bird flu was discovered at a duck farm in western Vendee province of France, Tokyo suspended imports of chicks and poultry meat from the country.
“While France is a major exporter of foie gras, Japanese restaurants and consumers will try to make up for it by importing from other countries,” said an official.
In 2008, Japan imported 404 tonnes of uncooked foie gras. Canned foie gras is not affected by the suspension.
