Poultry industry leaders in the UK are to converge at the NFU headquarters in Stoneleigh next month to debate the implications of Britain leaving the EU for the sector.

The National Farmers’ Union has set up the meeting which will focus on 3 key elements:

  1. trade and scenarios and options,
  2. access to labour and domestic policy and improving competitiveness and
  3. the effects each may have on the poultry sector.

British and European perspective

The meeting on 8 September will be chaired by NFU director general Terry Jones and will also include presentations from Brussels-based poultry policy adviser Richard Potts, which will focus on the European perspective.

Gary Ford, NFU chief poultry adviser, said that given the significant implications of Brexit, the meeting would be open to other poultry stakeholders including the British Egg Industry Council, the British Poultry Council, the British Free Range Egg Producers Association as well as the British Poultry Veterinary Association and retailers.

Clear set of tasks

Its aim is to have a clear set of key asks and agreed lobbying ahead of the forthcoming autumn party conference season. Speaking about the consultations following the Brexit vote, NFU president Meurig Raymond said: “This is the chance to shape the future for our industry for all future generations of British farmers and growers.

“Nobody should be under any illusions that Brexit will happen in a matter of months. The process of leaving the EU and of creating a domestic agricultural policy will take time and that’s why the NFU has taken the opportunity to carry out this robust consultation.
