According to a new report, Africa’s chicken meat market is likely to see steady growth and is expected to reach 11 million tonnes by 2030.
The revenue (total revenues of producers and importers) of the chicken meat market in Africa amounted to US$ 11.4 billion in 2018, an increase of 6.1% from the previous year. The market value increased on average per year of 1.8% between 2013 and 2018.

Chicken meat consumption
In terms of chicken meat consumption in 2018, the report revealed the following figures.
With a combined 52% share of total consumption were:
- South Africa, 2.1 million tonnes
- Egypt 1.1, million tonnes
- Morocco, 720,000 tonnes
Angola, Algeria, Ghana, Libya, Nigeria, Malawi, Tunisia, Congo and Democratic Republic of the Congo together comprised a further 27%.
In terms of value, the largest chicken meat markets in Africa were:
- South Africa (US$ 3.3 billion),
- Egypt (US$ 1.8 billion)
- Morocco (US$ 1.1 billion),
together accounting for 54% of the total market.
The countries with the highest levels of chicken meat per capita consumption in 2018 were:
- Libya (39kg per person),
- South Africa (36kg per person)
- Congo (23kg per person).
Consumption is expected to increase over the next decade as the demand for chicken in Africa rises, with a projected market volume of 11 million tonnes by the end of 2030.
Chicken meat production in Africa
A total of 5.7 million tonnes of chicken meat was produced in Africa in 2018 an increase of 4.2% from 2017. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of 2.4% between 2013 and 2018. In 2018, South Africa produced the highest volumes of chicken on the continent (1.8 million tonnes) followed by Egypt (1.1 million tonnes) and Morocco (720,000 tonnes), with a combined 62% share of total production.
Imports of chicken meat to Africa
The chicken meat import price in Africa stood at US$ 1,038 per tonne in 2018, a year in which 1.9 million tonnes (in terms of value, US1.9 billion) of chicken meat was imported, an increase of 23% against from 2017. Angola (432,000 tonnes) and South Africa (370,000 tonnes) represented the major importers of chicken meat in 2018, accounting for near 23% and 20% of total imports, respectively. Ghana (213,000 tonnes) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 12% share. In value terms, Angola (US$ 465 million), South Africa (US$ 372 million) and Ghana (US$ 188 million) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2018, together accounting for 53% of total imports.
