Brookside Agra develops all-natural AI solution

US-based Brookside Agra has developed an all-natural, multi-purpose solution to combat avian influenza. The product, AgFlu, has shown to be 99% effective against the Avian Influenza A virus, better known as H5N1, and other mutated strains when sprayed on surfaces and equipment, and ingested through drinking water by birds. The product contains bioflavanoids and organic acids and leaves no environmental residues and is non-corrosive. Researchers at Chongqing Institute of Technology in Chongqing, China sprayed the H5N1 virus inside a sealed testing box, then sprayed the inside with AgFlu. A 60-day-old chicken was then raised in the testing box after half an hour. AgFlu was sprayed in the box once in the morning, then at night for 15 successive days. The study concluded that after spraying 50ppm of AgFlu twice daily, the protection rate from the virus was 100% in 15 days.


Adisseo and Novozymes launch their first probiotic for poultry

Animal nutrition companies, Adisseo and Novozymes, have launched their probiotic for poultry, Alterion, on the US market as well as in a number of countries in the Middle East and South East Asia. Developed from a unique strain of Bacillus subtilis, a naturally-occurring bacterium found in soil, it allows farmers to better control gut health of their animals.

The launch is the result of an extensive collaborative programme. Novozymes used its expertise in biotechnology to perform in-vitro testing and is responsible for development and production. Adisseo, an expert in animal sciences, performed in-vivo testing and manages marketing and sales. The companies estimate the value of the probiotics market to be €200-300 million with 8-10% annual growth. The partners strive to become key players in probiotics for animals and accelerate the expansion of this fast-growing market.

Cargill opens new animal nutrition TAC in Turkey

Cargill has established a new Technology Application Center (TAC) in Yakapınar, Izmir, Turkey to help dairy and poultry customers in the Middle East, Turkey and Africa leverage and apply the best possible feed technologies to grow their businesses. The new TAC further strengthens Cargill’s presence in the region following a 2015 deal in which Cargill acquired a majority stake in Ekol Gida, a leading company operating in premix and feed additives markets in Turkey.

A poultry centre is scheduled to be constructed and operational by the end of 2017. When the poultry centre is completed, research at the TAC will be extended to poultry gut health and maximising production efficiencies while using local ingredients for poultry nutrition. The poultry centre will house 2,000 broilers and 2,000 layers.


HatchTech and Bell & Evans join forces for new hatchery

Bell & Evans and HatchTech have signed an agreement for the construction of a new turn-key hatchery project, which will be located in Fredericksburg, PA, USA. The greenfield hatchery includes 36 MicroClimer Setters and 12 HatchCare units, as well as complete HVAC with heat recovery and will have a production capacity of 78,000,000 day-old chicks a year. As a well-known supplier of organic and antibiotic free chicken, Bell & Evans’ philosophy matches perfectly with HatchTech’s innovative solutions. “Introducing HatchCare to the USA market together with Bell & Evans is a perfect move for both of our companies,” explained HatchTech’s International sales manager, Gilbert Klumpenaar. “Bell & Evans is producing antibiotic-free and organic chicken, with a strong focus on animal welfare. The HatchCare system will contribute to everything they stand for.”

USAPEEC to showcase poultry at Gulfood

The USA Poultry & Egg Export Council (USAPEEC) has teamed up with the US Dairy Export Council (USDEC) and U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) to showcase US cheese, meat, poultry and egg products in ‘Taste of the USA’, at Gulfood in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Gulfood will be held Feb. 21-25, 2016, at the Dubai World Trade Center. “USAPEEC’s presence at Gulfood has grown substantially over the years, indicating the importance of the Middle East for US poultry and egg exports,” said USAPEEC President Jim Sumner. “This year, we’re partnering with 2 US export organisations to promote ‘Taste of the USA.’ for the first time at Gulfood and we are looking forward to showcasing US products to buyers and chefs.”


Alltech feed survey reveals growth in poultry feed production

Results from the 2016 Global Feed Survey by Alltech estimates international feed tonnage is now at 995.5 million metric tonnes, a 1.5% increase over last year and a 14% increase since Alltech first published Global Feed Survey results in 2011. The analysis of 5-year trends showed growth predominantly from the pig, poultry and aqua feed sectors and intensification of production in the African, Middle Eastern, Latin American and European regions.

The 2016 survey showed poultry feed has the highest market share and is growing faster than any other species, with 46% of total global feed manufactured specifically for broilers, egg layers, turkeys, duck and other fowl. Poultry feed production continues to surge with a 5% increase, now at a total 463.69 million metric tonnes. This year’s survey also confirmed that corn and soybean meal are the standard feed ingredients globally.
