FDA: deadline for label regulation compliance

Packers have to comply with deadlines when it comes to the adherence to recent and future labelling guidelines.

The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has set 1 January 2010 as the deadline for complying with food labeling regulations issued between 1 January 2007 and 31 December 2008. Companies will have until 2 January 2012 to adhere with labeling regulations that are issued between 1 January 2009 and 31 Dec 2010.

Allergen advisory label

A change that the FDA is currently working on has to do with allergen advisory labelling, an efforts to make those statements uniform across the US.

Even though the FDA has main authority on the issue of changing labelling requirements, such as declaration of allergens, USDA works closely with the FDA.
