Aviagen holds 1st European Veterinary Forum

Poultry breeding company, Aviagen, recently hosted the inaugural European Veterinary Forum. This meeting included veterinarians who support the health and welfare of Aviagen Grandparent (GP) stock across Europe as well as members of the internal Aviagen veterinary team.

The forum focused on ways to consistently improve the health and welfare of GP stock. All participants were encouraged to play an active part in the meeting by presenting case studies on a number of topics and participating in group discussions.

In these group sessions, veterinarians compared and contrasted the individual vaccination programmes used by each operation, and suggested changes that would provide offspring with improved maternal antibody levels. Other topics discussed included antibiotic resistance, changes to rules governing antibiotic prescription across Europe, leg health, an update of the compartmentalisation project and monitoring of chick bacterial levels.

Bill Stanley, Aviagen’s Veterinary Health Director for Europe, commented: “Aviagen stock across Europe is supported by a wealth of veterinary expertise and bringing this group together was an enormously valuable process. It was a great platform to initiate regular, ongoing communication between the veterinarians supporting GP operations in Europe, and was the first of many discussions aimed at improving the health and welfare of Aviagen GP stock in the region. I am confident the discussions and decisions made by this group will lead to improved outcomes for our customers across Europe.”
