The hype around biofuels was a topical issue at the International Feed Expo (IPE) in Atlanta in January. US President Bush also emphasised in his “State of the Union” address the necessity to become less dependent on oil imports for fuel requirements. A shift in markets is to be expected. Being a brewer by education and thus a fermentation specialist, T. Pearse Lyons, president and founder of Alltech, is in the position to judge the current debate on the use of valuable raw materials for food, feed or fuel.
