Canada’s poultry and egg farmers welcome new Bill on trade

Egg Farmers of Canada, Chicken Farmers of Canada, Turkey Farmers of Canada, Canadian Hatching Egg Producers and Dairy Farmers of Canada have welcomed Bill C-282, an Act to amend the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act (supply management) in the House of Commons. This, according to a press release, is a “critical piece of legislation”.

“We now call on all Senators to show their support for Canada’s dairy, poultry and egg farmers and the millions of Canadians who value fresh, local, made-in-Canada food items by ensuring Bill C-282’s passage in the Senate and into law,” they stated.

The organisations continued to say that enacting Bill C-282 into law would not only strengthen and protect Canada’s essential system of supply management but that it would “present the opportunity to champion growth within Canada’s agricultural sector and support thousands of jobs and economic activity across our country”.

This Bill, they said, has been carefully studied by the House of Commons Standing Committee of International Trade and would safeguard the sustainability of the poultry, egg and dairy industries in the country, which, as noted in the statement, contributes CAN$30.1 billion to the GDP and supports over 339,000 jobs across Canada.
