Adisseo announces the winners of research grant

The 2 winning projects of the first €1 million Adisseo Research Grant were:

  • ‘How to feed broilers during infection with, and recovery from, coccidia in different environments: functional role of amino acids’ by Professor Ilias Kyriazakis (AFBI, Northern Ireland) and Professor Oluyinka Olukosi (University of Georgia, US)
  • ‘GutMIVir – Understanding the contribution of the gut microbiota to mucosal immunity and antiviral defences in the chicken’ presented by Dr Rodrigo Guabiraba (INRAe), Professor Bernd Kaspers (LMU, Germany) and Professor Lonneke Vervelde (UEDIN/Roslin, UK).

The 1st Adisseo Research Grant launched in mid-May and aims to encourage international labs to collaborate on significant challenges facing the feed industry. Those challenges include sustainability, antibiotic bans, new feedstuffs, early feeding and hot conditions.

5,300 visitors at the Dutch Pork Expo and Dutch Poultry Expo

The most recent edition of the Dutch Pork Expo and the Dutch Poultry Expo in the Netherlands presented 250 exhibitors jointly visited by 5,300 people. The Smart Animal Farming knowledge platform was launched during the events, which will be expanded further for future editions. The next Dutch Pork Expo will be held from 14-15 February 2023 in Den Bosch, the Netherlands.

Cobb China Academy resumes

After nearly 2 years, Cobb China has resumed the annual Cobb China Academy in Shenyang and Qingdao where experts shared recommendations with 150 customers from around the country. During the event, Cobb presented the Cobb Champion Broiler Award to Tyson Foods China and Cargill Animal Protein (Anhui), and the Cobb Breeder Award was presented to Otto & Sons (Weihai). In 2020, Tyson Foods China’s broiler flock achieved an EPEF of 426.5 while Cargill Animal Protein (Anhui) achieved an EPEF of 413.5. In sold flock year 2021, Otto & Sons (Weihai) achieved 151.40 chicks per hen housed at 65 weeks.

De Heus acquires Masan’s feed business in Vietnam

De Heus Vietnam has signed an agreement with Masan to obtain control of 100% of the feed-related business of MNS Feed (100% ANCO and 75.2% Proconco), which covers 13 feed mills and 1 premix plant (total capacity of nearly 4 mmt). This will become the largest animal nutrition company active in the Vietnamese independent feed market. Strategic supply agreements will also see De Heus supply pigs and feed to Masan.

ADM unveils nutrition R&D lab in Switzerland

ADM has opened its new animal nutrition laboratory in Rolle, Switzerland. With a focus on sustainability, the lab has been established to support the development of science-based feed additives for livestock species, petfood and aquaculture.

Beta Bugs launches Beta Buzz insect farming publication

Beta Buzz was created to shine a light on the ever-growing insect farming industry and aims to help the sector address some of the questions regarding the farming of the Black Soldier Fly. It is geared to assist new entrants into the market and farmers who want to diversify into the insect farming industry and supply an alternative, sustainable source of feed to their animals. The first issue of Beta Buzz focuses on the technology suppliers who can facilitate the set-up and running of insect farming operations, helping to improve on-farm performance or to help with progressing to the next stage of scale.

Kemin begin work on clean-label protein ingredients facility

In Verona, Missouri, Kemin Industries has broken ground on a US$40 million investment – a production plant for Kemin Food Technologies to manufacture its Proteus portfolio of clean-label protein ingredients for meat, poultry and protein-based applications. The facility is scheduled to open in March 2023. The site will have an initial capacity to create applications for more than 45 million tonnes of meat, poultry and protein-based ingredients.
